Lactation Counselling

There are many benefits to breastfeeding/bodyfeeding, including:

  • Human milk is the best source of nutrition for most babies, as it changes by the hour to suit their needs

  • Human milk protects babies from many illnesses and diseases

  • Breastfeeding/bodyfeeding protects the lactating parent from future diseases, such as cancer and type 2 diabetes

  • Breastfeeding/chestfeeding can be convenient and enhances the bond between parent and child, which protects against postpartum depression

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends breastfeeding/bodyfeeding for at least 2 years if possible. With the many challenges that may arise throughout one’s lactation journey, support from our lactation counsellor Katie can help you reach your goals.

Katie Jackson is a Certifying Breastfeeding Specialist and a Registered Nurse, so you know you are receiving excellent, comprehensive support.  Katie offers prenatal classes, in-clinic appointments and virtual support options and can be covered through some insurance providers.

What is a Breastfeeding Specialist?

A Certified Breastfeeding Specialist (CBS) is a lactation professional who has received 52+ hours of training in the education and support of breastfeeding/chestfeeding families.  A CBS supports families through pregnancy, breastfeeding initiation, and the normal course of lactation.  A Breastfeeding Specialist can:

  • Provide prenatal education and support in preparation for breastfeeding/chestfeeding
  • Assess the parent and infant and provide a care plan for breastfeeding/bodyfeeding issues
  • Coach parents in optimal feeding positions, latch, how often to feed, and how to tell your baby is getting enough milk
  • Provide support for common problems, including pain with latching, baby not gaining weight, clogged ducts, supply issues
  • Assess effective feeding and milk transfer
  • Support parents in maintaining milk supply upon returning to work
  • Refer and collaborate with local International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) for complex lactation issues

Prenatal Lactation Support

It can be beneficial to see a lactation counsellor while pregnant to equip you with knowledge on how to navigate common feeding challenges, make a plan based on your feeding goals, and know when to seek help.

Postpartum Lactation Support

A lactation counsellor can provide support through feeding challenges, including:

    • Pain while bodyfeedbing/breastfeeding
    • Baby not gaining weight
    • Supply (too much, or possibly not enough)
    • Difficulty with latching
    • Positioning issues
    • Expressing/pumping milk
    • Clogged ducts and mastitis
    • Oral restrictions and post-frenectomy support
    • Bottle feeding
